Instilling Weirdness

Discord recently renovated their headquarters in San Francisco. While the renovation was incredibly successful, they felt that there wasn’t enough whimsy and weirdness characteristic of their old office. We were asked to lightly sprinkle in elements of their distinct culture through environmental graphics throughout the space.

Pursuing “Blurple”

As the Creative Director and Project Manager, I worked closely with the main designers and Lolly, our brilliant illustrators. Working with Discord’s own creative team, we made sure to align to their newly revamped branding guidelines. This meant thinking smartly about how to incorporate gaming “easter eggs” as well as how to best mix in time consuming 3D graphics with 2D elements.

A big challenge the team did not foresee was nailing the famous Discord “blurple” color in print. Blues and purples are notoriously hard to print right so this meant taking the printing and installation in house. Many, many test prints later, we were able to match the digital color in physical form.
