Why does the bond between maker and made break in the digital realm? Today, the digital experience of “making” cannot yet replicate the phenomenology of handcraft. This thesis used traditional ceramic methods such as slip casting and Kintsugi and tried to replicate them through brain computer interfaces and 3D modeling software.

Brain Computer Interfaces for Design
I used a market-ready brain computer interface and connected it to bespoke grasshopper scripts. This allowed me to “sculpt” a ball with my mind state and create “breaks” along the surface of the changed sphere. I was curious whether I can create “happy accidents” similar to traditional methods of ceramics where a small slip of the hand can significantly affect the final product. I then printed my models in a variety of material, even ceramic.
